Why Background Checks are Important for Nonprofit Organizations

You would think that people who volunteer or apply for nonprofit organizations have a golden heart.  They are there because they want to serve and make the world a better place to live in.  Ideally, that should be the case but realistically, the truth is far from that.  It is a good thing that even nonprofit organizations screen their applicants because otherwise, a lot of people who should not be there would have made it in.  Nonprofit organizations only have the best of the best people in terms of character because they learn more about an individual before accepting them.  They do ...

Why Background Checks are Important for Nonprofit Organizations

Author:

You would think that people who volunteer or apply for nonprofit organizations have a golden heart.  They are there because they want to serve and make the world a better place to live in.  Ideally, that should be the case but realistically, the truth is far from that.  It is a good thing that even nonprofit organizations screen their applicants because otherwise, a lot of people who should not be there would have made it in.  Nonprofit organizations only have the best of the best people in terms of character because they learn more about an individual before accepting them.  They do not just go about the usual resume submission and interview.  They take it a step further.  They conduct background checks to make sure that their volunteers are of good moral character.

It was mentioned earlier that if nonprofit organizations did conduct background checks, they would have gotten people who should not be a part of their noble cause.  That is because by conducting background checks within a period of 5 years, over 189,000 individuals who attempted to apply or to volunteer actually have a criminal conviction record.  This is shocking news but you will be even more shocked as we breakdown the audit in the year 2007.  Among the applicants and volunteers, 2700 were registered sex offenders, 3900 are convicted of sex related crimes, 37400 were drug users and 651 even have murder convictions.

Without a screening process and without conducting background checks, do you think that nonprofit organizations would have learned about that?  Most definitely not.  After all, what can you expect in interviews but smiles and all the good things?  True enough, you can’t judge a book by its cover because even the most noble looking person around may have a criminal conviction and just by looking at their façade, there is no way to find out for sure.  Hence, you have to be more pro active and dig deeper.  You need to conduct a background check to make sure that you are hiring the right people.  In the case of a non profit organization, it is not enough that the people are skilled.  They must have the heart for it as well and a good moral character to see them through all the tasks that they have to face.  Clearly, the 189,000 who tried to secure a job at a non profit organization did not make the cut.

You would think that non profit organizations are safe from frauds and all sorts of people with a dark past.  Statistics show that that is far from the truth.  Hence, it is most helpful to do a background check. That way, you can weed out the people who are not qualified for the job and accept those who are worthy of it because they share the organization’s vision.  With a proper screening process, people working for a non profit organization are safe from harm, allowing them to do what they do best – help others.

Free Network Monitoring Tools - 6 Types of Tools You Can Get for Free

A network monitoring tool is mandatory for every network administrator for multiple reasons, but probably the most important one is the safety and successful run of the network. In order to maintain such security measures, most administrators rely on paid software, especially since they don't have to pay themselves, but the managers. What they fail to understand is that some free network monitoring tools are just as useful as any paid tools. It is true however that there are not too many out there. The amount of money a manager should invest also depends on the size of the network and on the privacy of the data stored there.

Anyway, the first and easiest way to monitor a network is by keeping an eye on the bandwidth. According to what the users usually do on this network, you should have a leeway bandwidth for every day, week or month. At some point, if it goes higher than usual, then you probably deal with a problem. Whether your network is poorly secured and hackers can easily get in or one of the users got a trojan or a malware script running, various data or files are being transferred from the network to other places, without you or the users actually noticing it. This is one of the reasons your bandwidth may increase and cause difficulties. Therefore, a tool to monitor the bandwidth is a network monitoring tool.

A pinging tester is also a free method to monitor your network. There are even more free such network monitoring tools than paid ones. That is because it is simple and any basic programmer can get one going. All it does is send signals to the network in the background, without bothering the users at all.

The ports are known to be the doors of your network, so you should probably monitor them first in order to successfully monitor your entire network. Various network monitoring tools will also provide filtering or "smart" features, that detect malicious scripts themselves.

Security or node network monitoring are also among the most common tools for administrators. However, they imply a little more effort being set up and dealt with. They are recommended for the more advanced network administrators who actually know what they are doing.

Last, but not least, a controversial network monitoring method is using an activity monitoring tool. It is imperative to actually let your users know they are being monitored, otherwise you will be invading their privacy. Such a network monitoring tool is probably the deepest and most precise method to take care of a network.

Therefore, there are multiple free network monitoring tools out there, you just need to make sure you actually pick the right ones and you know how to use them. Some tools may only give you the fake impression they work, without actually doing anything. The same goes if you don't know how to set them up. You may think you are protected against hackers or malicious scripts, yet be as transparent as glass.
