Why Every Employee Should Undergo a Background Check

Would you hire a criminal or one who has a criminal record?  Would you entrust your company’s deepest secrets to a person who will use the information in a negative way?  Would you let a person into your office knowing that they could mean you harm in the future?  The answer to all those questions is simple – no.  But how can you really answer those information if you lack information about a person?  Do you think that you could spot criminals by looking at their resume?  Can you tell if you can trust a person just by interviewing them?  Would you know if a perso...

Why Background Checks are Important for Nonprofit Organizations

You would think that people who volunteer or apply for nonprofit organizations have a golden heart.  They are there because they want to serve and make the world a better place to live in.  Ideally, that should be the case but realistically, the truth is far from that.  It is a good thing that even nonprofit organizations screen their applicants because otherwise, a lot of people who should not be there would have made it in.  Nonprofit organizations only have the best of the best people in terms of character because they learn more about an individual before accepting them.  They do ...

Important Reasons to Have an Employee Background Check

Author:

For large companies, having a background check is often part of the standard operating procedure.  For smaller ones, however, they view it as an expense that is not necessary and so they usually skip the process and just go on right ahead and employ an applicant that they think will fit well for the job.  The problem, however, is that all applicants have secrets – some more serious than others and could directly affect the way that they perform at work.  That is why having a background check is important regardless of whether your company is small or big.  That way you know for sure what the applicant that you are considering is like.  Is his or her character right for the company?  Will he or she truly be an asset?  A background check will reveal all that and more.

A background check is not so much an expense as it is an investment.  How is it an investment?  It is an investment because each employee, especially those with critical positions has access to some of the sensitive information within the company.  That information cannot fall into the wrong hands.  Let us say that an employee is in charge of client database collection.  You cannot risk that employee sharing your client’s personal information to other companies or worse, selling it.  That would totally ruin your company’s reputation and re-earning the trust of those clients would take a long time.

Second, a background check is an investment and not an expense because it greatly minimizes employee turnover.  With a background check, you can know for sure if the character of the employee would fit right in with the company.  That is a big determining factor if an employee would stay for a long time or would leave after a while.  For every employee that leaves, the company suffers some form of loss because companies invest on their employees.  They train them at work and sometimes, even by spending for their seminars and workshops.  Hence, it is most cost effective for a company if employees stay for years and years.  Besides, if you hire a person who does not have the same vision as the company, that person could stay but would perform at a minimum.  Those are not the kind of employees that you want in your company.  You want those who will happily work for the accomplishment of projects.

Third, having a dishonest employee is very difficult.  Each and every member of the company should be able to trust each other in order for projects to be accomplished with excellent quality and on time.  Background checks cover a wide variety of areas from character references, criminal or court records, personal acquaintances and the like.  If an employee has a streak of dishonesty, then nothing would reveal it better than a thorough background check.

Hence, background checks are not an expense but an investment.  With the right employees, your company could progress and soar.

10 Frequently Asked Questions about Background Checks

1. Why Do a Background Check?

Doing a background check is an opportunity for you to verify information. Whether you receive the information from a job candidate, a prospective tenant, someone applying for credit or anyone you feel you need to know more about. A background check can also reveal information that was either mistakenly or intentionally omitted.

Using background checks can help you verify degrees or certifications that were earned and provide specific information about employment history.

If you are an employer or landlord, background checks will help you to reduce your risk of lawsuits and help you to protect your assets.

2. What Types of Background Checks Are Available?

Here is a quick bullet list of some of the types of background checks available:

• Address history
• Social security number trace
• Federal criminal records
• Statewide criminal records
• County criminal records
• Instant criminal history
• Sexual offender registry
• Federal civil records
• County civil records
• Department of motor vehicles driver’s history
• License and certificate confirmations
• Education confirmation
• Prior employment confirmation
• Workers compensation records
• Drug testing
• Reference checks
• and many more...

3. How Much Do Background Checks Cost?

Background check costs can vary depending on the number of searches included in the screening requests. Simple checks can cost as little as $20.

By combining several searches into a single background check package, many companies can offer a better price per screening. Some background check companies can offer volume discounts to companies or individuals that order their services frequently.

Also, there is software that can be purchased to do your own background checks on the Internet.

4. How Long Does It Take to Complete a Background Check?

Most employee background checks can be completed in 48 to 72 hours. Most companies can complete address searches and credit reports, instantly.

Statewide and County criminal searches can be completed within 48 hours. Education and employment confirmations are usually done in 48 to 72 hours.

5. How Do I Receive the Background Check Information?

With most companies that do background checks, you can select the option that suits you best. The company can e-mail results directly to you. Results can also be faxed, viewed online or sent by regular mail.

6. What If There Is a Mistake on the Credit History Portion of a Background Check?

The applicant has specific rights outlined in the summary of rights, which must be provided to the subject of the background check. This is specified in the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). The applicant or the employer or whoever is making the request for the background check, should make an inquiry, and it will be investigated.

7. Should a Nationwide Criminal Background Check Be Requested?

An accurate nationwide criminal history check would be possible, but extremely expensive. It is misleading to advertise a “Nationwide Criminal Search” because it does not include all states and is done by searching databases, not the court system. Many of the courts do not participate in submitting their records to these databases. The records of these databases are frequently outdated. 3000 courts throughout the country would have to be searched, since there is no central repository available for criminal records to the private sector.

8. Can I Do a Background Check on a Minor?

Juvenile records are not available, but if the subject of the background check was tried as an adult, you may be able to find the records available in the courts.

9. Do I Need a “Release” Form from the Subject of the Background Check?

A signed release form should be obtained from any subject of a background check. Be sure to keep a copy of a signed release form for your own files. Also, be sure the subject of the background check receives a “Summary of Rights” (as required by the Fair Credit Reporting Act) with their copy of the signed release form.

10. When Is a Driver's History Background Check Required?

If anyone is driving on behalf of your company or organization - even once - they're driving history should be checked on a regular basis.
